Welcome to CFK

Caring for the Kenai is an award winning environmental contest that challenges high school students to answer the question "what can I do, invent, or create to better care for the environment on the Kenai Peninsula, or to help improve the area's preparedness for a natural disaster?" This contest brings together the entire community of Alaska's Kenai Peninsula and offers over $25,000 in cash awards to area schools and local students.

This contest is co-sponsored by Chevron and Tesoro. Through their sponsorship and the support of many other organizations, this contest has been recognized on the national level. We invite you to browse this web site and learn more about why this community partnership is so successful!

“The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is pleased to again be a part of the Caring for the Kenai competition.
The District’s students greatly appreciate both Chevron and Tesoro’s generous sponsorship of this important annual event.
The opportunity that Caring for the Kenai offers our students to showcase their creativity and ingenuity is unsurpassed.”

Dr. Steve Atwater KPBSD Superintendent of Schools

Congratulations, Freya Chay!
Our 2009/10 Caring for the Kenai Winner!

With an idea to encourage private investment in alternative energy sources, Freya Chay became the fourth KCHS student in as many years to claim top honors and a $1,500 cash prize at the annual Caring for the Kenai (CFK) environmental awareness and disaster preparedness competition. “It was a great learning experience,” said Chay, “I basically took an idea that was passed in a Borough Resolution to the state level, spent my spring break in Juneau testifying and was successful in getting my amendment included as part of Senate Bill 220.”  The amendment would allow local governments to exempt alternative energy systems from real property tax assessment.
